TURTLE CONSERVATION

Status: Need new support!!

Sea turtles are remarkable marine creatures, yet many species are increasingly threatened by a combination of climate change, pollution, habitat degradation, and human activities. In North Sulawesi, additional pressure comes from the continued capture and consumption of sea turtles in some coastal communities, posing a serious threat to their long-term survival. This conservation project aims to support the protection and recovery of sea turtle populations through monitoring, nest and habitat protection, hatchling conservation, and community education. By increasing public awareness of the ecological importance of sea turtles and the impacts of unsustainable practices, the program encourages coastal communities to become active partners in their protection. Through continued conservation efforts and local participation, the project seeks to ensure that future generations can continue to encounter sea turtles in the waters of North Sulawesi.

Why?

  • Illegal turtle hunting and consumption still occur in some coastal communities, despite existing laws that protect sea turtles from capture and killing.

  • Sea turtle populations continue to decline, with all species facing significant conservation threats and several classified as endangered or critically endangered.

  • Community awareness and capacity need to be strengthened so that coastal communities can play an active role in protecting turtles, their nesting areas, and their marine habitats.

  • Education and practical conservation training are essential to encourage long-term behavioral change and build local support for sea turtle protection.

Activities

  • The project was initially developed as a pilot initiative in Ranowangko 2 Village, with strong participation from local community members who voluntarily support conservation activities.

  • Sea turtle monitoring, including population observations, data collection, and the development of individual turtle profiles.

  • Field surveys to identify nesting areas, assess habitat conditions, and collect information to support conservation planning.

  • Conservation infrastructure development and maintenance, including the management of a turtle hatchery and the protection of designated turtle nesting zones in Ranowangko.

  • Education and awareness campaigns to increase community understanding of the threats facing sea turtles and encourage greater participation in their protection.
